“Spank! returns for an incredible 16th year with hilarious hosts, awesome comedians and gratuitous nudity. Showcasing the most exciting comedy and cabaret on the Fringe, don’t miss the ‘best wild night out’ (Scotland on Sunday) at the festival!”
Review by Richard Lambert, 5 Stars
Now in its 16th year this must be the most successful show on the Fringe. Starting at 23:55 it’s a 3 hour show that never fails to pull them in and entertain.
The formula works – get Comedians to do a short set and line up around 8 per evening.
All MC’d in the very safe hands of James Loveridge who whips up the crowd and occasionally sorts a trouble-maker. With a boozy audience who aren’t your theatre lovies he’s incredibly experienced and brilliant on this particular tight-rope.
And then in the 2nd half of the show is a huge crowd-pleaser. One person or group is/are allowed to get on stage with the microphone and do a 4 minute promo for anything they like. It could be their own production here at the Fringe, or it could be a worthy cause tackling an issue – such as Laura’s promotion last night which covered both: a women’s right to say “no” and her own show at CC Blooms on 21st and 25th August.
There is a catch…….those promoting from the stage must be naked. Ha ha! Yes, that’s right! Oh the British do love a bit of culture, innit!!!!!
The line-ups are always brilliant! The evening has an interval for another beer round and an enebriated 180 happy people empty into Cowgate at 3am. Every night, for 16 years and counting!
Long may SPANK! reign as the most successful show at the largest Arts Festival in the World!
