In a dazzling display of impeccably honed stage craft, Benson gives an unsparing portrayal of the
tormented comic genius, lurching from hilarity to self-pity in public and in private.
David Benson is a tour de force when it comes to acting. His skills extend beyond the accents and the impersonations, he manages to make his facial expressions look exactly like the character he’s portraying.
The first half of the show is a chat with the audience about the good old days of television. He aimed this exactly right to land with the demographic of the audience – a mainly 60s crowd who enjoyed Children’s television of the 70s. Discussing the merits of Blue Peter, Magpie, Jackanory and many others of that era.
The second half of the show has a few chapters but is predominantly dedicated to a restaurant scene with Kenneth Williams dining out with friends. His repartee is superbly constructed to not only entertain but to also show the character of Kenneth as he “holds court” at the table. His interactions with the restaurant staff, other diners, and his dinner guests is a total revelation. I did grow up and knew someone very well who worked in the theatre who behaved in a very similar manner.
A character who feels they have to entertain to earn their place at the table. Never enough to just be part of the party. With hurt feelings when the humour lands a little too vicious and is rebuffed by somebody. Offense given and offense easily taken on a kick-back.
It’s the sort of dinner party you’d want to watch from behind a cushion as it spirals out of control and descends from pleasantries towards aggression.
This touring production has no set or costume changes, no props, and comes across as a spoken-word lecture. The sound and lighting cues saving the day with perfect timing to add some flavour.
Benson is truly a master of his craft and this evening makes for a delicious masterclass in acting.
