Nathan Cassidy: Ewwww! is exactly the sort of Fringe comedy where you go in expecting a bit of a laugh and end up chatting to the person next to you afterwards about what you’ve just witnessed!
Nathan is a really likeable performer and his audience interaction is a big part of what makes the show work. He has great comedic timing, is quick on his feet and isn’t afraid to change things up depending on what the audience throws at him. There were several moments where a comment from someone in the audience was picked up and then cleverly brought back later, which made the whole thing feel spontaneous rather than like a routine being repeated night after night.
The show is nicely paced too. There’s very little hanging around and Nathan keeps things moving along at a good clip, making the hour fly by. The material itself is funny, but it’s really Nathan’s personality and ability to bounce off the room that make the show.
And then there’s the ending!
Nathan gets completely naked, which is certainly one way to finish a comedy show. It’s very much a gimmick, but it’s also extremely funny and got the reaction it was clearly designed to get. Nathan is a handsome bloke with a great body, so he certainly has nothing to be embarrassed about, and it’s quite unusual these days to see full male nudity in a Fringe show.
That said, I did wonder whether the nudity could have been worked into the story a little more. Perhaps a bit of teasing earlier in the show, with some items of clothing coming off for increasingly ridiculous reasons, could have made the final reveal feel more connected to the comedy rather than simply appearing as a surprise at the end. A bit of a burlesque-style build-up could have been very funny.
But honestly, that’s a minor point. I laughed throughout the whole hour and had a genuinely great time. Nathan is a very confident performer, knows how to work a room and clearly enjoys playing with the audience. If you fancy something silly, cheeky and very funny, Ewwww! is definitely worth a look.
