A Microscopic Odyssey

★★★☆☆
excellent soundscape and musical compositions

A Microscopic Odyssey tells the true story of microbiologist James Weiss, who discovers unexpected solace and inspiration in something as humble as a muddy puddle. Through his lens, the everyday becomes extraordinary, revealing a vibrant hidden universe teeming with life.

This imaginative new production invites audiences to experience science not as a set of dry facts, but as a source of awe, creativity, and connection. By venturing into the microcosmos, A Microscopic Odyssey reminds us that we are not separate from nature—we are part of a vast, intricate web, much of it too small for the naked eye to see.

Reducing a man’s life named James Weiss into such a simple story and turning it into a play is a risky concept. In this production, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of story – he was abused by his father and retreated into a World of microscopic study and wonder. Replacing the microscope with an overhead projector allows the audience to see what he discovers.

With no set, one costume each and the aforementioned OHP remaining onstage throughout, the design is simplistic to say the least. What unfolds is “1001 ways to use an OHP” many of which are very creative and interesting. Add in some choreographic pieces here and there and it’s more psychedelic than structured but again rather interesting.

Where the show excels is in the four performers commitment to the piece. Their interest in the material carries the show along and maintains a steady pace.

And what is excellent is the soundscape and musical compositions throughout.

Crafted with passion and performed with belief this is a great start to what will be an exciting production company.

Director Hope Wishart collaboratively created with designer Enza Kim, lighting designer Jason Ahn, composers and sound designers Caleb Wilton and Charlie Jones, movement director Bianca Mikahil, assistant director Arista Abbabatulla, and producer Amelia Shelmerdine.

The cast includes Ben Boulton-Jones (James Weiss), Allie-Rae Fossum (Ensemble), Elijah Bai Bangura (Ensemble), and Phoebe Smyth (Ensemble).
