A Fairytale for Christmas

★★★★☆
a concert that is very wholesome

Following four sell-out tours, Irish Christmas concert A Fairytale for Christmas returns for its biggest tour yet this winter, including a monumental night at West End’s Dominion Theatre. This fantastic celebration from the team behind crowd-pleaser Seven Drunken Nights – The Story of the Dubliners promises to combine the merriment of Christmas with the joy of St Patrick’s. A Fairytale for Christmas brings together talented singers, musicians and dancers for an unforgettable Irish Christmas like no other.

Beautiful dancing and lively singing pepper this production on a tour that’s staggeringly busy. Many Irish people were in the audience singing along to the songs they all know and love. A traditional concert that mixes a live band, singers and Irish dancers in a blend that’s upbeat and fun.

Despite there being a live band there are also backing tracks which I think worked for the most part. The live microphones in the mix weren’t always so clear and it was odd that the “bar man” was possibly another musician or even the musical director but his role seemed to be to look handsome and smoulder rather than actually play a keyboard. He might have served a couple of drinks but he was definitely serving Hollywood leading man vibes.

The irish dancing was wonderful. How the girls can get that high when they jump is a marvel! Possibly the choreography when not doing the irish tended to be rather ISTD twee and the girls did their best with it.

The standout feature of this show has to be the lighting. It was stunning! It didn’t miss any accents in the music and in addition to enhancing the mood and the pace it never failed to light their faces when singing. This is especially brilliant when you consider that this is a tour which only has one day to get a show of this scale in and out of a theatre. Lots of fantastic looks created that were fabulous. Lighting designer Alistair Penman should take a bow!

As a concert this is very wholesome and one for the family, especially if you’re Irish and would therefore know all the songs.
