I Made You A Mixtape

★★★★★
"exciting, high energy, dynamic, multi-talented entertainment!"

Welcome to the party you always wished you were invited to. ‘I Made You A Mixtape’ throws you
straight into the heart of a 90s college dorm hang, complete with lava lamps, folding tables,
plastic cups, board-games, old-school camcorders, and the greatest hits of the decade. Nine girls
arrive for one last night together before their lives change forever. What begins as a carefree
evening of music and dancing unfolds into a deeply soulful collage of friendship, nostalgia,
heartbreak, and joy. With each track they play, a new world opens: improvised music videos,
chaotic games, secret confessions, and the kind of laughter that makes your chest ache.

Review by Richard Lambert

An unusual start to the show sees the artistic director/choreographer hold up hand-written placards which let you know that we’re in a dorm with 9 girls who have one final party night together before their lives change. It’s a low-key start and the placard theme continues although it moves to two music stands at the rear of the performance space. The start and end of the production could be tighter and punchier. Not sure that this was going to be for me…..

But I couldn’t have been more wrong! Each of the dancers had a story to tell, each expressed through choreography and dance performance skills. Backed up with a great selection of tracks from the 90s it just got better and better. Once I got the format I was hooked and loving it!

With very simple set, props and costumes there’s not a lot to either distract nor enhance the production. It all comes down to the raw energy and talent of the cast. And this is a great cast. Each one coming across as an individual – by the time they’ve “danced their story” you’ll be on their emotional journey. A mix of fun, energy, love, tragedy…..each one different. With solos, duets, and group numbers and each section coming together and breaking out with great unison in the detail required, and great passion when individual. This is exciting, high energy, dynamic, multi-talented entertainment!

Response Theatre Company is a very welcome addition to the fringe theatre scene – a unique blend that’s original and thoroughly entertaining. I’m looking forward to their previews in June and their future productions which I’m sure will be equally commanding!
