Invisible Me

★★★★☆
"a fun night out with an experienced cast and team"

Invisible Me takes a dive into the universal challenge of navigating the dating pool. The comedy-drama addresses themes British theatre typically avoids – sexagenarian dating, sudden bereavement, the social effects of being HIV+ and the sobering need for community, whatever our age.

Review by Richard Lambert

With some very funny one-liners, this three-hander plonks us like a fly-on-the-wall watching the lives of these over 60 something’s navigate life. The situations are very funny with lots of innuendo and slightly inappropriate behaviour and inner-thoughts for people of their age.

The play trots along really nicely until the final scene when it gets a little bogged down at the disco.

The cast are brilliant and throw themselves into their characters in a believable manner. The direction really good and dynamic. All aided and abetted by David Shield’s tiered platform stage edged with LED Lights and a similar shaped rear wall, again with rear LED and embedded LED strips. The quality of the set build is astonishing, as if a joiner had constructed it with tiles routed out and painted. Although abstract to the reality of the story’s locations it works really well. A few carefully placed chairs and good performer positioning managing to keep the clarity of who’s where and who is separated. Take a look at the photos to see how vibrant and exciting the set is with the LED strips.

Most of the lighting works really well despite the downstage central dark spot. This experienced cast know how to find their lights and are visible from all three sides of the thrust staging.

The sound is perfect. Just the right touches here and there, under-stated rather than intrusive, and all at the right levels.

This is a fun night out with an experienced cast and team and it shows.
