Through the lens of the larger-than-life drag persona Scarlet, SELF CENSORED offers an unfiltered glimpse into a mind caught between self-protection and self-expression, examining the tension between who we are and who we feel compelled to become.

Self Censored belongs to the fringe theatre tradition of deeply personal storytelling, where performers draw on their own experiences to offer audiences an honest and heartfelt perspective. These intimate productions often encourage reflection and understanding, inviting us to see the world through someone else’s eyes.
One of the most interesting themes explored is the balancing act of wearing a metaphorical mask to appear “normal”. While that mask can provide confidence and protection, it can also make it harder to seek the help, support and understanding that people sometimes need, leaving them feeling isolated despite outward appearances.
Through original songs, accompanied by live keyboard and musician, Oscar shares his experiences with warmth, humour and sincerity. The music provides an engaging framework for the storytelling, allowing both the lighter and more emotional moments to resonate.
A particularly effective device is Oscar’s larger-than-life alter ego, Scarlet, whose confidence and swagger contrast with his more vulnerable self. Alongside this, conversations with a plush toy add another layer to the narrative, offering moments of humour while revealing deeper thoughts and feelings.
The production keeps the audience engaged with frequent changes in style, lighting, music and direct audience interaction, ensuring the performance never loses its energy. While the narrative itself may not reveal every aspect of Oscar’s journey, what shines through most strongly is his engaging personality. The most memorable moments come when Scarlet breaks off script and relaxes into natural conversation with the audience, allowing warmth, wit and authenticity to take centre stage. It is these genuine connections that make Self Censored an enjoyable and heartfelt piece of fringe theatre.
About the Artist
Oscar Brennan is a writer, performer, and musician. A graduate of Leeds Conservatoire, his work combines theatre, drag, and original music to explore identity, vulnerability, and contemporary experiences of masculinity and neurodivergence. His recent work includes the UK touring production of Twisted! The Musical, alongside his debut solo show SELF CENSORED.
