Fly away with me on a wonderous adventure where we’ll meet all my friends – from the enchanted toys in the nursery to the dancing fruit in the kitchen. Soar to the North Pole just in time for our Christmas party where snow-folk from around the world meet penguins, princesses, the fiendish Jack Frost, and of course Father Christmas himself. It might even snow…
Back to see again the wonderful ballet The Snowman. It never fails to impress and is a Christmas joy and a treat for the children. Taking the classic story and expanding on it to include many wonderful animals and even Father Christmas turns up to dance with all the snowmen.
A scary Jack Frost appears in the second half but is defeated by the snowmen and even Father Christmas refuses to give that bad boy a present.
With every scene short and a frequently changing set and characters, it’s perfect to keep the youngsters engaged and laughing. Of course, there are a few tears when the final scene shows just the hat, scarf and gloves in a pile that was once The Snowman but the children coped with this better than I did.
The flying is quite extraordinary! This is a production that’s been around for many years and the wires are well camouflaged and clipping in and out for the Boy and The Snowman perfected. When they fly with the swell of the music it’s truly emotional!
The technical aspects of this show demonstrate how traditional theatre used to be (before the pandemic) when everyone was musical and knew theatricality. The gauze starts to fly on a musical beat and disappears out of sight on the 8th beat, the set changes are magically performed, the set design takes us from a house and street, to a larger indoors from a boy and Snowman’s perspective. The live band do justice to the beautiful music.
Looking at the age group of the audience, I would suspect this could very well be their very first ballet and/or dance show they’ve ever seen outside of their dancing school annual display. A fantastic introduction to something of quality and talent and shows a different World to the pulp they may see at home (Love Island comes to mind!).
A timeless beautiful show that everyone should see at least once, if not again and again!
