Reimagining the traditional talk show through a theatrical lens, House Seats blends intimate interviews with live performances and audience interaction. For this first edition, Henry will be joined by West End favourite and Olivier Award nominee Ian McIntosh, known for his roles in Les Misérables and Jesus Christ Superstar.
The evening is designed as a crossover between the spontaneity of The Graham Norton Show and the reflective storytelling of Desert Island Discs, creating a space for both entertainment and genuine insight. Henry will open the evening with a live musical set before sitting down for an in-depth interview and a special onstage duet with Ian, all accompanied by musician Leigh Stanford Thompson on the piano.
Review by Stephen Gilchrist
Crazy Coqs, and its next-door neighbours, Bar Américain and Brasserie Zedel have become, over the recent past, one of my favourite places in London in which to relax, and via which to be entertained and fed and watered.
Crazy Coqs has increasingly promoted and platformed an eclectic variety of performance by theatrical and musical folk in a wide canvas of disciplines and now they are hosting a once a month talk show.
In the first, young Henry Patterson, the British singer and comedian, taking advantage of his casual, youthful charm, interviewing style and humour nicely offset his interviewee, musical theatre star Ian McIntosh, currently playing Jean Valjean in Les Mis. The interview gently probed his background, essentially overcoming his humble background to achieve lead roles in the west end, never sad stories, but always aspirational. He came across as a star who could barely believe his own good luck in achieving what he has. Of course, luck may always play a part but it is McIntosh’s talent that has carried him to the West End.
Patterson opened the show lightly and delightfully giving us Annie’s ‘You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile,’ accompanied in this and throughout by the talented and reliable Leigh Stanford Thompson on keys.
The show featured a ten song set of musical theatre numbers from McIntosh, each deliciously delivered in his glorious tenor and savoured by the audience, especially those from shows in which he has appeared, including the National Tour of Tim Sheader’sesus Christ Superstar, Barry Mann in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical Galileo Figaro in We Will Rock You, Deco Cuffe in The Commitments, and Follies (at the National Theatre).
McIntosh’s catalogue featured ‘Try a Little Tenderness’ from The Commitments and, interestingly ‘Why Should I Wake Up’ an outstanding Kander/Ebb book song from ‘Cabaret,’ albeit it being one of the book songs cut from the present production. He followed these with “If I Didn’t Believe in You” a pivotal song from the musical The Last 5 Years by Jason Robert Brown, where the character Jamie confronts his partner, Cathy, about her insecurities. In this, McIntosh’s acting, accent and vocal interpretation were perfect.
Later in the set McIntosh duetted with Patterson The Jungle Book’s ‘I Wanna Be Like You’ and The Confrontation from Les Mis while finishing with ‘Bring Him Home.’
This show succeeded on every level, the chat, the songs and the obviously warm relationship between the participants. This series, if each episode following is as good as the first, deserves success as a relaxing, disarming, illuminating and entertaining evening. The packed house loved it.
