Review by Richard Lambert

XXX Revue is one of those Fringe shows where you really don’t know what’s coming next. And that’s half the fun!

Aidan Sandler is a great host and compere. He makes everyone feel welcome from the moment he walks on stage and keeps things moving nicely.

First up, we get a male pole dancer. He strips down to a mankini and long black socks. Not a combination you see every day but no full male nudity here. Then we have a female burlesque dancer with a feather boa, plenty of sparkle and a big smile.

Next comes a burlesque performer who hangs her clothes on a washing line. The only problem? She runs out of pegs. Fortunately, she finds some in places I certainly wouldn’t have thought to look. Let’s just say I learned something new!

There’s also a magician doing some card tricks, which gives us a nice change of pace before the finale.

And what a finale it is. A very confident lady arrives in feathers and high boots, looking like a dominatrix who has taken a wrong turn into a bird sanctuary. Once the stage manager loosens the pole, she gets spinning, slides down and lands in the splits.

Then she reveals a little more than expected and heads into the audience. Judging by the reaction from some of the men in the room, they were very happy customers!

The set is simple, with just the pole doing most of the heavy lifting. The lighting gives it a nightclub feel and the sound does the job.

One of the fun things about XXX Revue is that every show is different. The performers change, so you never quite know what mix of acts you’re going to get. You could see a completely different show the next night, which makes it one worth coming back to.

It’s silly, cheeky and doesn’t take itself too seriously. There’s dancing, burlesque, magic and plenty of laughs. If you want a Fringe show where anything could happen, XXX Revue certainly delivers.
